An Interview with Lace
________________________________________
What is your name?
My name is Lace. Who said that?
And you are 36 moons in age?
Yeah, I guess. Who are you?
What gender are you?
Show yourself!
Answer my question.
Why? Can't you tell I'm a female? Who are you, and what do you want?
I'm not here to hurt you, I'm a friend. I'm just here to ask a few questions.
Fine, but you better be telling the truth. Continue.
What clan are you in?
I'm not in a clan I'm a loner. I've heard of the clans, though.
What do you look like?
Can't you see me?
Yes, but-
If you can see me, then you can say what I look like.
You have a pale tabby grey pelt with some white around your muzzle, eyes, paws, and underside. You're eyes are a pretty, pale blue. You have a long tail and whiskers, and your slender shape makes me think you might be a fast runner.
Oh, wow, you didn't actually have to describe me out loud. That's just awkward.
How would you describe your personality?
I don't know, I guess it could be hard for anyone to get to know me. I don't think I've met a cat I can trust yet. I want to trust someone I just can't. I don't normally talk this much, either. I'll probably end up saying something that makes me sound weak or vulnerable, and I'd prefer not to be a target. I suppose I'm pretty smart, though. I wouldn't try to hurt other cats. I might get mad, but I would just feel too guilty if I tried revenge. I'm usually alone so I don't have to worry about that stuff much. I can handle being alone, but I enjoy company from time to time as long as they're not bringing any trouble with them.
Why don't you share your history?
My history? Well, I started out as a kittypet. I had some siblings. I would play with them sometimes. My mom was nice and cared for us all. I didn't really see my dad much. He was a stray. I don't really remember too much about that time. I was adopted by new house folk before long.
I didn't really like the new house folk or their child. As soon as the little one saw me it pounced on me, scooped me up in its strange arms, and squeezed me. So I avoided it after that and it started avoiding me after I gave it a good few swipes with my claws. That was a dull place for the first year I was there. I was the only cat in the house, and none of the house folk played with me often. I guess they were okay. They got me plenty of toys so I wasn't too bored out of my mind. My favorites were the ones with catnip!
Anyway, soon they got a dog. The thing wasn't too bad at first, but then it started growing. Before long that thing insisted on chasing me all over the house like I was prey. No matter how many times I hissed, scratched at it, or told it to leave me alone it kept on pouncing after me. That's when I started staying as high up as I possibly could on the furniture. Dogs have large claws, but they're no use for climbing.
You're not a kittypet anymore. What happened?
Oh, that. The thing is I'm not completely sure what happened. One day the two adult house folk left and had some other one I didn't know stay behind to watch the young one. They didn't come back after that. The next day a lot of house folk showed up at the house. I knew something must have happened because they locked the dog in the back yard and kept me in a room until all the other house folk were gone. Eventually some of them started taking things, and the younger one would start to leave with them. They took everything, and I was left to a new set of house folk. They never wanted me in the house. That's when I started learning about the outside.
Some nights I would return back to their den and find they had a bowl of food out for me, but I was learning how to hunt. I couldn't survive off of that stuff forever. While I was out learning sometimes I would come across other cats. Some were friendly and either tried to help me, or just wanted to talk. Others were not as nice. I never got away from those ones without a good mark. I can't say I regret coming face to face with those other cats. They're the ones who taught me how to defend myself. However, they are the reason why I left the streets and started living in the forest. It was the only escape from being constantly cornered, and I was tired of being ambushed all the time by those bullies.
So I went out to live in the forest, and I still live here. I usually just hunt and take walks, but I never go too far from my den. If I do I might lose it to a fox or something. The hunting here is different than finding prey on the streets, but there's a lot more. It's an easy life as long as you don't cross the clan boundaries. I've seen groups of them taking on loners and other cats that accidentally cross their borders. The other cat never gets away without the clan cats managing to get their claws on them. I don't know exactly how the clans work, but they remind me of the street cats and I don't like it.
